She Done Him Wrong (1933), from director Lowell Sherman, is Mae West's star-making, most famous film role as a liberated, racy woman who enjoyed her sexuality - as a character named Lady Lou. The Naughty/Gay Nineties character was a recreation of her own 1928 Diamond Lil Broadway stage play (and its bejeweled title character). Credits for its screenplay were given to Harvey Thew, John Bright and Mae West herself.

Vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm.) black-and-white single weight glossy silver gelatin print still photo, USA. Mae West, Cary Grant, Owen Moore, Gilbert Roland, Noah Beery Rafaela Ottiano, dir: Lowell Sherman; Paramount. Mae West strikes her "Come up and see me sometime" pose in this, her most popular film. As star and screenwriter, Mae West burst upon the cinema scene in 1933 and single-handedly saved Paramount Studios from the financial disaster the Depression had brought upon them. She was harassed by the Breen Office for her bawdy humor, but that made her notorious and popular. Mae West as a writer and as the character she created for stage and screen taught audiences to laugh at, and accept sexuality. Though her stories were often set in the corset-bound Victorian age (as with this film, based on her most popular and revived play Diamond Lil), she did more than any other writer/performer to break down the moral and psychological rigidity of the time. Still is coded 1412-153. A stunning portrait with great texture and gloss -- and very possibly the finest portrait we have ever handled of the unique Miss West (and a master study in the art of photo retouching, to boot!) There are two tiny pinholes at middle of left edge margin and one at the top right corner, all filled in. Tiny crease near top right corner, ABOUT FINE. -moviephoto -maewest -shedonehimwrong -precode
