Eli Smith
Eli Smith died November 23rd, 1885. Father Smith was born in the State of New Jersey, Oct. 15th, 1792.
At the age of ten years, his parents moved with him to Fayette County, Penn., where, at the age of nineteen, he was married to Elizabeth Rounzoin. In the year 1821, he moved to Morgan County, Ohio, settling in Penn Tp., near what is known as the Bernard Mills. In the year 1833, his wife died and the following year he was again married to Ellen Quigley, who preceded him to the other shore, March 8, 1872. He was the father of eleven children--seven sons and four daughters--seventy-four grand-children, one hundredand sixty-seven great grandchildren, and twenty-five great-great grandchildren.
Father Smith was, at the time of his death, 93 yrs., 1 mo. and 8 days old; was a member of the Disciple Church about seventy years. He never became discouraged concerning the work in the church, always having a word of encouragement for all the brethren. No matter how inclement the weather he was always in his set on Lord's Day meeting; he was an untiring and zealous Disciple in the Master's cause, frequently having traveled fifty miles to meeting in the beginning of our Reformatory movement.
His home for the last five years has been with his son, W. R. Smith, during which time he has enjoyed good health, for one of his age, up to Thursday evening, Nov. 19, when he was stricken down with paralysis of one side. He remained conscious, but unable to speak, apparently knowing all around him till within a few hours of death, which occurred Monday, at 10 o'clock, when his long and eventful life closed in peace, surrounded by nearly all his children that are in the county. His remains were followedto the cemetery at Wolf Creek, by relatives and friends, and there laid to rest, till the Arch-angel's trump shall awake the sleeping dust to a bright and never-ending immortality beyond this vale.
