He attended Bosse High School and Evansville College in Evansville, Ind. He was a captain in the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He earned the Silver Star, Bronze Star and was a Purple Heart recipient. He was the co-owner of Harris Insurance Inc.

and was a multiple award winner for insurance sales. Prior to moving to Tampa, he moved to Venice, from Evansville, in 1997. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Lodge 8118 in Venice. 48121. Robert Smith Robert Albert Smith, 84, died Monday morning, August 19, 2002, at his home i in Escondido, California. He was born May 20, 1918, in Benton, Illinois, the son of B. Floyd and Pauline (Moore) Smith. He married Mary Alyce Gordon on May 23, 1941, in Charleston, Missouri.

She died in 1976. In 1980, he married Ruth Elizabeth (Claybourn) Johnson, widow of E.E. 'Chick' Johnson of Evansville, who survives. Educated at the University of Illinois at Champaign and Southern Illinois State Normal University at Carbondale, he received his bachelor's degree in history in 1941. After his honorable discharge as an Army captain in 1946, he returned to the University of Illinois and received his doctorate in history in 1950.

He taught history at Mankato State College in Minnesota, from 1949 to 1965. In 1965, he became one of the original faculty members at California State University at San Bernardino and taught there until his retirement. He was the author of "The Social History of the Bicycle." He is survived by two sons, David and wife, Ruth of Woodland, California, and James and wife, Sandra of San Diego, California; four stepchildren, Janice May and husband, Ray of Bonfield, Illinois, Deb deForest and husband, Dan of Magnolia, Texas, Pam Taverner and husband, Clyde of Wichita, Kansas, and Bob Johnson and wife, Beverly of Boonville, Indiana; five grandchildren, Matthew Smith, Brian Smith, Alison Smith, Bryan Johnson and Blakely Johnson; and two sisters, Sue Drake of Jackson, Tennessee, and Jeanne Thalman of Carbondale, Illinois.
